Log your Dive

Join us in our mission to restore the underwater ecosystem at Caspar Cove by logging your dives for purple sea urchins. These voracious grazers have decimated the kelp forests, but with your help, we can make a difference.

Caspar Cove Purple Urchin Culling - Dive Log

California’s north coast has been devastated by declines in bull kelp, resulting in part from increases in native purple sea urchin populations. The purpose of this project is to investigate whether in-water purple urchin culling by volunteer divers can support kelp regrowth at Caspar Cove. Results will help project managers determine whether in-water purple urchin culling is a useful kelp restoration tool to be used more broadly.

  1. Grab your gear and head underwater to remove purple sea urchins from Caspar Cove. Every dive counts towards restoring the balance of the marine environment.

  2. Divers should only target purple urchins as per temporary regulatory amendment.

  3. Log Your Dive: After your dive, log your sea urchin removal efforts on our website. Your data will contribute to our understanding of the population dynamics and guide future conservation efforts.

  4. Each individual diver should complete one log entry per dive.

  5. Divers must have a valid recreational fishing license (except on July 4 and Labor Day)
